Self-Determination Skills of Students with Intellectual Disabilities, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, and Autistic Disorder, comparing South Korea and United States

Abstract
The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate difference of self-determination between individuals with intellectual disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, and autistic disorder in South Korea and United States. Total 171 students with disabilities participated in this study, 87 participants from South Korea and 84 participants from the United States. As a result of this study, first, comparing the countries, the participants self-determination skills in the United States resulted to be higher than the participants in South Korea. Comparing the types of disability, the level of self-determination in order which they appeared: emotional and behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities, and autistic disorder. Second, comparing the self-determination¡¯s sub-domains, autonomy, self-regulation, psychological empowerment, and self-realization between South Korea and the United States, autonomy and psychological empowerment in the United States were resulted to be higher than they were in South Korea. In comparison of the types of disability, level of self-determination¡¯s sub domains was in order which they appeared: emotional and behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities and autistic disorder. However, the result showed no significant statistical difference on self-regulation of the countries and the types of disability. The result showed no significant difference on self-realization of types of disability, but in comparison of these countries, self-realization in the United States resulted to be higher than it was in South Korea. Based on the result of investigating, this study has provided discussions and suggestions relating to the previous study.
